Custom House Burger

Custom House is a well-known restaurant in the South Loop neighbourhood of Chicago that regularly receives solid reviews from those that eat there. Until recently, the restaurant was only open for lunch during the week. To promote the weekend lunch service during the summer, Custom House started serving up their burgers for only $5! Bacon ($1) and fries ($3) were extra, but who can resist a $5 burger from quality meat ground in house? The best part is that because everything is done in house, you can actually specify the doneness of your burger. There’s nothing worse that well-done, grey, flavourless burgers. The burgers served up at Custom House are the complete opposite of that!

After hearing from friends that medium-rare resulted in a tartare-eske centre, I asked for my burger to be on the under side of medium. The guys on the grill cooked it perfectly. Fries were well seasoned and served with malt vinegar on request (a must for fries!). Nice bun with plenty of sesame seeds that ended up all over the table, regardless of how hard everyone tried to not make a mess.

Clean, stylish comfortable room. Good service. If I didn’t have a wine tasting to attend after lunch I would have had a cocktail or two. I tasted a friends’ who ordered the Custom House cocktail (12 year Ron Zacapa Rum, simple syrup, fresh lime juice, Champagne, Angostura bitters, fresh mint, chilled and served straight up) and it was delicious! I think I’ll have to check them out for dinner next time I’m in town.
